The Olympic Torch - our moment to shine

Ironbridge Cultural Olympiad launch 2008

For 70 days during May, June and July next year the eyes of the world will be on the UK as the Olympic Torch visits more than 1000 communities shining a spotlight on our people and places.

The Olympic Torch Relay signifies one of the most monumental moments in the countdown to the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.  It is also one of the few occasions when the eyes of the world will be focussed on parts of the UK outside of London, including the West Midlands.

The Olympic Flame will arrive from Greece on 18 May 2012 and will travel around the UK covering 8,000 miles in 70 days; 7 of which will be spent in the West Midlands visiting 70 communities.  The Torch relay will shine a light on the whole of the UK, giving thousands of communities and individuals their moment in the spotlight as the Olympic Flame comes to a place near them.

The Olympic Flame will be carried across the UK by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers each of whom will have a story of personal achievement and/or contribution to the local community.
